Hives

Hives, also called urticaria, is an allergic skin problem in which itchy, red, swollen welts appear anywhere on the skin.  It is usually due to exposure to ingested food or drug but sometimes hormonal imbalances around the menopause, or thyroid disorders can precipitate an episode of hives. Occasionally some forms of lupus can appear similar to hives and patients with hereditary angioedema can develop hives.

The treatment will depend on the cause of the episode.  Any offending drugs or foods should be stopped immediately, if known. Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benedryl or Claritin are usually effective within twenty minutes. If the hives appear on the face, lips, tongue or throat, or breathing is affected, emergency care should be sought.

If the hives are widespread, affect the face or lips or are occurring repeatedly, professional care should be sought to assist in determining the cause of the allergic condition.  Blood or skin testing may be required to identify the cause.
