Laser Tattoo Removal

 Laser Tattoo Removal (video)

Can the laser remove my whole tattoo?

Laser Tattoo Removal has come a long way in the past five years.  The Q-Switched Nd-YAG laser is the most versatile tattoo removal system.  It can remove black and dark blue colors without scarring in about ten sessions.  Colors such as red, orange, purple and some lighter blues may be also successfully removed.

Unfortunately no laser can remove the newer flesh tones, white, or yellow tattoos, and sometimes these tattoos even permanently darken after laser treatments.

Is tattoo removal by laser painful?

It usually feels like when the original tattoo was applied.  Topical anesthetic creams can be applied for 30 minutes before the procedure which lessens the sensation.

How long is a treatment?

Treatment time depends on the size and complexity of the tattoo as well as the color.  A small tattoo may take under five minutes to treat, where a large one could take over an hour.

What is the cost of laser tattoo removal?

Price is usually determined by size, complexity and colors.  A short session can be priced from $250 or more with longer sessions, considerably more.

How long between treatments?

It's best to wait at least 2 months before having another session because the skin's natural cleansing mechanisms take quite a while to remove the pigment.  Also more frequent sessions may lead to scarring.

I have cosmetic tattoos near my eyebrows.  Can hair loss occur?

Yes, the wavelength of the tattoo laser may cause damage to the hair root, which could result in permanent hair loss near the tattoo.

Are there other ways to remove tattoos?

Yes, many other procedures have been tried, including surgery, dermabrasion, chemicals and cautery.  All these lead to scarring, however.   In some small tattoos, the scar may not be a problem, and surgical removal can be faster and less costly.  See your dermatologist, who will be able to recommend the best approach to treating your tattoo.
