Before and After Photodynamic Therapy of Acne
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a procedure combining light therapy, usually laser, with a topically applied medication like 5-aminolevulinic acid (Levulan). The Levulan is applied about an hour before the light treatment so it can be selectively absorbed by the target cells in the skin. When the light strikes the target cells, they are damaged, but the surrounding cells which have not absorbed the Levulan are not injured.
This procedure can be used to kill skin cancer cells or to damage the oil producing cells that cause acne.
It is also used to stimulate new collagen growth in the skin and to remove age spots that occur in sun damage or premature aging.
How many treatments will be required to clear acne?
It is variable and depends on how severe the acne is. If other medications are used like retinoids, only one to three treatments may be necessary. Treatments are typically spaced 2-3 weeks apart.
How will my skin look after a treatment?
You will have a few days of redness and possibly peeling, like a bad sunburn. Keeping the skin hydrated with an oil-free moisturizer like Oil-Less Moisturizer and treated with antioxidants such as topical Vitamin C serum will help speed healing.
Are there any side effects of PDT?
Yes, you will be sensitive to all light for 72 hours after the treatment and are more susceptible to sun burns. After a treatment you will need to avoid light to prevent this complication. Otherwise, there are no side effects.
How many PDT treatments are required for treating age spots?
Usually only one or two treatments about a month apart are required to improve the appearance of sun damaged or prematurely aged skin.
