Spider Bite

What does a spider bite look like?

While almost all spiders are poisonous, most spider bites contain too weak or too little venom to do much harm.  Two small holes where the fangs have entered may be seen. The skin reaction to the bite can be slight redness to a swollen, red area involving a large body area.

What symptoms are caused by a black widow spider bite?

Black widow spider bites are rarely fatal. The most common symptoms after a bite (besides the pain of the bite itself) are muscle soreness or cramps, abdominal pain and mental irritation.

What treatment is there for black widow spider bite?

See your physician or go to the emergency room.  The symptoms will be treated, but in most cases, use of the anti-venom is not needed.

What symptoms are caused by a brown recluse spider bite?

Brown recluse spiders are found only in the Southeast U.S.  Brown spiders in other parts of the country can bite but are not as dangerous.  The desert recluse and the Arizona recluse spider bites are not fatal and produce a mild to moderate skin reaction.

Brown recluse wounds can blister and continue to enlarge into an ulcer.  Other symptoms may include sweating, chills, headache, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, rapid pulse and exhaustion.

What treatment is available for brown recluse spider bite?

See your physician or go to the emergency room.  You may be treated with pain medications and antibiotics.  Surgery is sometimes required to remove the venom and tissue which has become necrotic.

Other diseases can resemble spider bites.

Insect bites, especially tick bites, can be confused with spider bites.
