Hives
Hives, or urticaria, is an allergic skin condition which presents with itchy, red welts and is usually due to ingestion of a food or drug which is the allergen. Sometimes, lack of estrogen or thyroid disorders can precipitate an episode of hives. Over the counter antihistamines can be effective in simple cases, but hives which persist, or affect the face, lips, tongue or airway should be under the care of a physician specializing in allergic diseases.
